Hypnosis – What It Is And What It Is Not
Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in misconceptions. Some consider them to be some sort of spell while others refuse to even recognize their existence. Some of the common misconceptions linked with hypnosis and the reality behind them are given below.
Hypnosis has no connection with any sort of mystical arts. It is a very simple technique, which can be understood easily with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. The genuineness of hypnosis is suspected even by people who have seen it working on subjects. They say that hypnotised subjects allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not exhibiting enough will power to withstand the influence of their words. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally strong and are trying hard to block the spell.
Another belief is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A person under hypnosis does not get shut off from the external world, but stays completely conscious of the goings on around him. Hypnosis actually induces a state of absolute calm characterized by a rise in levels of attentiveness, and this intensified awareness helps the subject to receive new inputs without difficulty.
Some researchers have concluded that hypnosis works on just 5% of the human population, and this is another common myth. The scientists are somewhat true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis method without acknowledging individual differences in nature and temperament. Hypnosis can’t be straight jacketed like that and clicks only if there are different approaches for different personality styles.
People also tend to equate hypnosis with meditation. But while hypnosis is an interaction technique, meditation is all about a mental state and normally has nothing to do with communication. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. The individual doesn’t interact to achieve a state of trance, on the other hand hypnosis is impossible without communication.
It is commonly thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause transformations in physique or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is abnormal to the body. But by mentally conditioning an individual to abandon addictive habits like eating too much and chain smoking, and by heightening one’s motivation levels, hypnosis can usher in vital physical alterations in an individual and pave the way for a healthier body.
Experiencing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a richer and fulfilling life, and thus one must not pay attention to the misconceptions, and go for hypnotic sittings with an open mind.
